Maison et Objet Paris 2016 is almost here and we would like to show you some amazing brands that you will able to find at the tradeshow. Today, we present you: Les Gambettes. Céline Tahar and Doriane Sablon have been friends since childhood and now have this project in common. The brand is characterized by a range of ‘prêt-à-porter’ furniture that plays with nostalgia card successfully, combining decoration and fashion with a nod to the fifties to create items that have caught the eye of the prescribers. Like many of their contemporary thirty-somethings (but other age groups too), the duo loves ‘50s-inspired retro designs’ and the period’s optimistic aesthetic provides them with a real source of inspiration.

Using Formica was a foregone conclusion: “It’s a modern material. It’s easy to use and when you see it, the effect is similar to Proust’s ‘madeleine moment’. Our furniture gives rise to a form of nostalgia and triggers an emotional response. The happy days vibe comes bang up to date thanks to printed motifs – such as the palm leaves of Le Tropical Summer – and a playful selection of primary or pastel colours, so that everybody can invent their very own model. However we don’t want to limit ourselves to 1950s styles. In the future we may well try our hand at other periods and other materials.”

The fact remains that retro is on a roll. With some 200 retail outlets and a 30% annual growth in turnover Les Gambettes can’t complain. “We make sure our prices are competitive, which means we manage to do quite well even when times are hard”, Céline Tahar points out.

you can find yourself sitting on Vichy print, poppy red seats in a Las Vegas pizzeria and see their furniture in Dodos les Bobos in New York or in the Moscow restaurant, Funny Cabany.

Closer to home, the FrogBurger chain has also opted for Les Gambettes chairs. The latest addition to the range is a collection of wallpaper. “By adapting our motifs to paper, we can give more depth to an interior. Our strength is knowing what people want and where the trends are going.”
