“To understand what is coming, we need to understand where we are”, Dr Bertilsson
Dr Karl, a color specialist, believes that we need to analyze the past, and, specially, the present to predict what is coming. The NCS Color Trend Talk during IMM Cologne 2019, explored the Interior Color Trends for the upcoming years. It is the opportunity to understand which factors are driving the color directions for 2020+.
The first trend, evolving electricism, is about choosing neutral colors, however adding always a bright color. Orange, medium pink and pale blue will be the top chosen ones.

Like said before, colors gives us another vibe. For example, a colorful place attracts more people, and usually, they feel safer rather then in a neutral color room. The interesting thing is that people are more motivated when seeing bright colors, but when taking decisions, for example, the colors to use on their home décor, they usually go for neutral colors. Dr. Karl motivated everyone to not be afraid of using colors.
2020+ marks the beggining to a new concious world. Design is seen as a tool to solve the major issues of the planet, and the second trend presented reflects the way we take our decisions that affect directly the environment. Global warmth has changed the temperature worldwide, so we can expect some pale and cold colors, such as soft grey, white and natural materials, such as marble, wood and recycled materials, to remind us that we need to think twice about what is happening.
EDITOR’S CHOICE
White will be a big choice when it comes to home décor. The mixture of different textures, and materials, however keeping the minimalistic style.
Trend number three is about feminism, is about women fighting for equal rights. That is why we see, more and more, a equality of colors, shapes and home décor, whether is for a woman or a man. On this color palette, we would like to highlight the greenish yellow that is going to invade the place!
EDITOR’S CHOICE
There is not needed a lot of bright colors, but the right amount of it!
And, last but not least, people are understanding that technology is taking over, and want to feel disconnected, that is why Nordic Design and minimalistic style are ones of the top chosen styles. The lack of stress, the connection with the environment, aesthetics holding hands with functionality. Here, we can expect not bright colors, but the medium colors that transmit us calm. Materials, we can say that they can go since wood, brass, etc.
