In a\u00a0Los Angeles home<\/strong><\/a>, neutral tones abound and a stunning dining room<\/a> takes center stage<\/em><\/span><\/h2>\n

Although Brentwood, in Los Angeles, is known for its glamour and glitz, this jet-setting family had a different thought in mind for their home<\/strong><\/a>. They had purchased a classic, white-paneled, 11,000-square-foot home that a previous owner had amped up, but needed to make it more comfortable and fit their family needs. For the transformation, they turned to\u00a0M. Elle Design<\/strong><\/a>, whose portfolio of work they\u2019d long admired.<\/p>\n

\u201cThey wanted us to run with that fresh, coastal, indoor-outdoor feel that\u2019s relaxed, yet elegant,\u201d says designer Marie Turner Carson, who owns the studio with her sister, Emily Turner Barker. \u201cWe first stripped things down to make the home\u00a0more contemporary<\/em><\/strong><\/a>\u00a0and take it to more of a restrained palette.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

The initial work entailed peeling away layers of paneling, wallpaper, and paint to create gallery-like spaces for the clients\u2019 growing art collection. The\u00a0designers<\/strong>\u00a0made sure to elevate the staircase too, for a more modern look, with slim, clean-lined oak handrails and black, steel balusters. The oak floors in the hallway were stripped and replaced by marble to add layers to the\u00a0design.<\/em><\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n

Despite the big changes in the hallway, the biggest was done in the kitchen. This space was completely gutted and reoriented with a range wall in the back, parallel double islands commanding the center, and a sink wall to the side. They also knocked down the wall between the\u00a0kitchen and family room<\/strong><\/a>, creating a seamless flow between the two.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Finding the right balance is all in the details, Carson says. \u201cIf you have the great bones of the\u00a0room<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0and you know the\u00a0shape and scale of the pieces<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0are correct, there is kind of that magical element at the end that brings in the finishing touch that makes all the pieces sing,\u201d she says.<\/p>\n

The lofty family room has a coastal, casual feel with custom drapes in linen. In one of the\u00a0sitting areas<\/em><\/strong><\/a>, a custom sectional wraps around a\u00a0custom stone coffee table<\/strong>, both by\u00a0M. Elle Design<\/strong>. Two vintage stools from Lief and a Le Minotaure chair by Pierre Augustin Rose surround the monumental block.<\/p>\n

In the adjacent sun room to the kitchen,\u00a0teak dining chairs<\/strong>\u00a0from Briggs & Co. circle a Juwel dining table from Stahl & Band, their warm tones picked up by a rose gold Oscar Pendant from\u00a0RW Guild.<\/p>\n

In the\u00a0dining room<\/strong><\/a>, a bronze, asymmetrical oak branch chandelier from\u00a0Cox London\u00a0pairs perfectly with the canopy depicted by American artist\u00a0Charles Gaines. The molded oak chairs from\u00a0Ruemmler\u00a0continue the theme, their natural grain pattern repeating like tree trunks in a forest and radiantly paired with the room\u2019s golden linen curtains.<\/p>\n

All in all, the remodel took a little over a year. The residence is an oasis for the extended family to gather, offering sun-drenched spaces that flow outdoors to the deep yard. \u201cIt\u2019s timeless, inviting, and livable,\u201d Carson says. \u201cAnyone who comes in is impressed, but can sit down immediately and not have to walk on eggshells.\u201d<\/p>\n
