\nOn this day, in 1990, Soviet leaders signed a document that symbolized the beginning of democratic reforms in Russia. It was also one of the first steps of the dissolution of the Soviet Union.

\nRussia Day<\/em><\/strong> became a public holiday four years after, in 1994, but many people refused to celebrate it due to the fact that it represented the end of the Soviet Union.

On 1997, Russia\u2019s first president, Boris Yeltsin, suggested to change the name to Russia Day to promote this day off as a patriotic holiday. The name was only changed a few years later, in 2002.<\/p>\n
