Fashion designer Marc Jacobs<\/strong><\/em>\u2019s New York townhouse is a real \u201ctour de force<\/em>\u201d of old-school glamour and serious design connoisseurship.
\nMarc Jacobs is no stranger to provocative gestures. Those who have followed his career over the past three decades are more than used\u00a0to seeing the jet-setting couturier in an array of exaggerated poses, whether\u00a0at the Costume Institute Gala at New York\u2019s Metropolitan Museum of Art tricked out in a peekaboo black lace dress over white boxer shorts or\u00a0exposing his own shapely bum\u2014by accident\u2014on Instagram.

\nConsidering Jacobs\u2019s free-spirit we can all be expecting his Manhattan home to be similarly unbound, irreverent or funky. But,\u00a0in fact it\u2019s quite the opposite. The four-floor Greenwich Village townhouse evokes the air of old-school chic design that wafted through the dreamy abodes of Jacobs\u2019s fashion forebears.

\n\u201cI\u2019m not big on having a particular concept or look<\/em>,\u201d Jacobs says about the aesthetic sensibility of his home. \u201cI just want to live with things I genuinely love\u2014great Art Deco furniture, pieces from the \u201970s, and contemporary art. But I didn\u2019t want the house to feel like a pristine gallery or a Deco stage set\u2014just something smart, sharp, and comfortable.<\/em>\u201d

\nWhen Jacobs purchased the newly constructed home in 2009 for himself and his fianc\u00e9 at that time, Lorenzo Martone, it was just raw space, and the couple hired interior designer Thad Hayes to oversee its build-out and decoration. Hayes recalls a telling moment early in the process\u00a0when he and Jacobs were discussing upholstery options. \u201cWe were looking at a classic boxy Jean-Michel Frank sofa and Marc said, offhandedly, \u2018Of course I love it\u2014it\u2019s tattooed on my torso.\u2019 Then he lifted up his shirt and showed me the couch.<\/em>\u201d
