The London-based practice, Emulsion, has transformed a triplex apartment in London, into a brutalist Barbican Estate<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0with a new mezzanine floor and a color palette inspired by Le Corbusier.

\nThe main goal of Emulsion, was to update the\u00a0residence while remaining sympathetic to the Grade II-listed complex. The Barbican Estate is one of the largest examples of the brutalist style, representing the city living!

\nReferencing the return of minimalism, they feature\u00a0austere detailing such as unornamented furnishings\u00a0and bold colour-blocked walls, alongside with original elements.

\n\u201cThe client was keen for us to create a new residence which would be sensitive to the iconic Grade II architecture, whilst maximizing the use of space,\u201d said the Emulsion\u2019s director Yen-Yen Teh.\u00a0\u201cThe interior palette includes feature walls inspired by Le Corbusier\u2019s color range against a neutral gray rubber floor, and dark wood and wired glass referencing materials of the original building.\u201d

\nThe triplex apartment has a kitchen and living room that\u00a0open onto\u00a0balconies overlooking the post-war complex,\u00a0alongside two bedrooms and bathrooms.\u00a0Highlighting\u00a0the\u00a0wooden treads you\u2019ll find a bright teal wall, creating a nice contrast between\u00a0the original and contemporary qualities of the space.

\nWas also incorporated a\u00a0mezzanine level into the barrel-vaulted top floor, to\u00a0accommodate a pared-back bedroom finished with\u00a0bold yellow furnishings and paintwork.\u00a0For the lighting scheme they choose\u00a0mid-century modern designs including\u00a0teamed with vintage pieces.
