By eliminating walls and incorporating a series of interior gardens, architect José Roberto Paredes creates an eclectic and inspired El Salvador beach house. In the kitchen, rough-hewn materials like a eucalyptus-log-and-thatch roof offset the monolithic concrete island and glossy subway tile backsplash. Claudia & Harry Washington built the vivid wooden sliding walls, which are inspired by the palm leaves that change color and create diagonal patterns in trees near the house. The bar stools were a street market discovery.

The surrounding, rolling landscape of this Malibu home influenced designer Bruce Bolander’s use of green on the cabinets and appliances in this kitchen.

In northern New Jersey, a cramped kitchen is reborn as a welcoming space for cooking and entertaining. Decked out in a subtle yellow, the kitchen houses a Wolf drawer microwave tucked unobtrusively under the counter in the display island.

This house in Carmel by the Sea is enlivened by its very red kitchen cabinetry. By knocking down a dividing wall, the architects opened the kitchen up to the rest of the living space. Ikea red lacquer cabinetry and Caesarstone countertops replace dingy cupboards and old-fashioned finishes. Stainless steel appliances help ground the airy, open space. (https://tjc.org)

Designed to harness the sun, architect Birgitte Hovmøller‘s vacation house near San Diego features a roof full of solar panels and plenty of space for an extended family to relax. Finished in a dark wood, the kitchen features white metal countertops and shelving. A white pendant light, white sheer curtain and a white wall tie the interior design scheme in with the home’s exterior palette.

Bolander strikes again in this house on the Venice canals in California. “This kitchen cabinets are finished with flat lacquer as none of the laminate colors worked with the house’s color/material palette and the client had a bit of an aversion to laminate,” he says. “The countertops are a material that is used for science lab tops. Very durable and a great solidity but frankly not very forgiving to work with.”
