The new skyscraper of London was unveiled – The 1 Undershaft was designed by the architect Eric Parry. The main goal was to create the tallest building in the City of London, which will rise 309.6m in the heart of the city’s financial district, squeezed between the Cheesegrater and the Gherkin. “It is the last piece in the jigsaw,” said Parry of his addition to this great dinner party in the sky, “so I wanted to do something that isn’t flamboyant”.
Parry’s 1 Undershaft will be the tallest building in the City of London, and the second highest in the whole city – pipped just to the post by Renzo Piano’s The Shard.
The skyscraper of 73-storey is being developed by Singaporean company Aroland Holdings, and if it all goes to plan, it’ll be finished in the 2020s. The plans include nearly 1.4 million square feet of office space, a free public viewing gallery, and what promises to be London’s highest restaurant.
It will stand among a group of skyscrapers in the City of London, including Rogers Stirk Harbour + Partners’ Leadenhall building – known as The Cheesegrater – and the forthcoming 22 Bishopsgate tower by PLP Architecture. Parry’s skyscraper will be 69.6 metres taller than the former, and 16.6 meters than the latter.
