The first library you can’t miss is the Wiblingen Monastery Library, in Ulm. Completed in the 11th Century it is a baroque masterpiece where the Benedictine monks used to live and is the north wing of the monastery.

The Stuttgart City Library is a modern work of art that includes a cavernous white media center and was designed by Yi Architects in 2011. When you enter it, it looks like you are entering in an M.C. Escher painting with all its corridors and stairs.

The Cottbus Library was founded in 1991 in Brandenburg associated to the technological University. It is work of Herzog & Meuron architects and its waved shape brings some resemblances to an open book. Besides that, the glass structure provides the perfect lighting to the study and reading.

The German National Library, in Leipzig, was built more than 100 years ago and has probably the biggest collection of books published in German. It’s an interesting architectural work that combines the old building with a more modern addition.

The University Library Heidelberg is the main library of the University of Heidelberg although it is open to the public. The library dates back to the 17th century but the current building was finished in 1905.

The Hamburg University Library was first built in 1479. It is the central reading room and archive for the University of Hamburg and is an academic resource for Hamburg residents. One of its highlights is the collection of rare manuscripts from all over the world.

The Herzog August Library, in Saxony’s Wolfenbüttel, is known also as Bibliotheca Augusta. It has an important collection of Middle Ages and Early modern writings from Europe.

The Jacob und Wilhelm Grimm Zentrum, Humboldt Universität zu Berlin opened in 2009, and it’s the main library for HU Berlin. Its architecture is work of the architect Max Dudler, and occupies 20,296 square meters. There you can find two and a half million books.
