MODERN MAKEOVER IN A MID-CENTURY HOME IN AUSTIN, TEXAS

Arthur Dallas Stenger was what some people might call “the Eichler of Austin”. The mid-century architect projected, in the early 60s, a few houses throughout a couple of neighborhoods south of the Colorado river. One of those houses was the mid-century home we’re about to see.

Retaken as a home makeover project, this unique home stands out for its roof, which is pretty much an “undulating affair that rests lightly on its glass-and-steel frame”. However, what we love the most about this Texas home are its newly decorated interiors.

The Butterfly House, as it is called, was bought by a young couple back in 2008, who then decided to make a complete makeover and bring out the best in this stunning architectural piece. Erin and Josh Bernstein believe that “this house is essentially optimistic. It looks like it could take off and fly away. You’re happy, and I could sense that when I walked in“.

The kitchen is “functional in a way that doesn’t feel like the kitchen is in the living room“, says architect Rick Black. He explains, “one of the goals was to make the islands more like furniture than like heavy objects that go all the way to the floor“.

In the new powder room, Jill Malek wallpaper added a graphic punch to custom cabinetry. The strong colors used are very reminiscent of the 60s and 70s, but still bring a modern touch to the design.
