European Best Destination, Porto Receives The European Design Awards
Porto is incredibly unstoppable! After being elected 2017 Europe’s Best Destination, Portugal’s northern capital was chosen to host the European Design Awards – EAD. From 23rd to 28th May, this capital will become the European Design Capital, hosting exhibitions, guided tours, workshops and the delivery of the 2017 EAD. Keep scrolling and find out everything you need to know.
The awards’ tenth edition, which distinguishes the best examples of European communication design in more than 30 categories, and is held for the first time in Porto with the theme Celebrating Creative Excellence, will be presented at the Rivoli Theater on Saturday at 6:30 PM, followed by the Winners Gala Dinner at the Edifício dos Correios at 9 PM.
During the week, there will be three guided tours, a conference, two workshops and, as of Tuesday, the exhibition of the Two Pages project, launched in 2012 by designers Konstantinos Trichas and Dionysis Livanis. Check the entire schedule below.
Two Pages Exhibition
“As part of this year’s European Design Awards Festival held in the city of Porto, Two Pages will present a selection of works from designers, illustrators, and artists who have participated in the 15 completed sketchbooks of the project. More than 450 artists have already contributed to the project from locations such as New York, London, Seoul, Tokyo, Paris, Berlin, Athens, Santiago de Chile and Porto to name but a few. The exhibition will showcase a selection of 112 spreads covering different approaches to responsive mark-making with illustration, photography, and design.” 6.30 – 8:30 PM | Silo Auto 7th floor | 180 Rua de Guedes de Azevedo
Two Pages Workshop
“Two Pages project invites graphic designers and illustrators from around Europe to explore Porto’s visual language and urban culture. The participants will be asked to exchange information and experiences in relation to Porto and discuss the city’s visual structure, influences and identity. The participation to the workshop is free but booking is essential. Apart from your design materials (pens, tapes, sketchbook, etc), please bring with you an object that best represents Porto.”
12 – 4 PM | Silo Auto | 180 Rua de Guedes de Azevedo A Tumblr Manifesto: The Critical Intentions of The Interface Deco – Workshop With Post Eady
“This workshop mines Tumblr as one such repository and dissects its contents. We aim to take on the absurd task of reading into and over-intellectualising graphic design trends in the hopes of mapping a territory. Discussion will drive this section as we pluralise popular graphic forms. Following this, we will attempt an inversion of this process by mapping both current and ‘dead’ or inert trends to contemporary contexts in a bid to examine if trends can be used as a plural set of heuristic responses. This workshop is free and will require you to bring a device with an internet connection, paper, and pencils.” 2 PM | Edificio dos Correios
“The Câmara Municipal do Porto is actually one of the city’s landmarks, situated at the top of Aliados Avenue, at the heart of downtown. Along with Clérigos Tower, this is one of the most famous monuments among tourists. This is going to be the venue for a welcome reception thrown by the City itself, and the mayor of Porto, Rui Moreira, in order to stress the city’s dedication and acknowledgement to the design profession.” Ten Years Ed-Awards Exhibition Opening
“The European Design Awards were launched exactly ten years ago in Athens Greece. During this time eight different studios have managed to fulfil the very strict criteria needed in order to be awarded the title “European Design Agency of the year”. For the first time in the history of the ED-Awards, we gather all these top performers in order to exhibit some of their finest work at the same place.” 8 PM | Edifício dos Correios
Awards Ceremony 2017
“This year’s award winners will be revealed at a ceremony hosted by stand-up comedian Alistair Barrie taking place in Porto’s Rivoli Theatre.
All winners will then walk to the nearby dos Aliados for their gala dinner. The night will wrap up with the annual Winners’ Party.” 6:30 PM | Teatro Rivoli Design for Porto Exhibition Opening
“The city of Porto is considered by many as Portugal’s design capital. Among others, it is the home of a studio that has won the title of “European Design Agency of the year” and another that has won an “ED-Awards Best of Show”. To a certain extent, the City (municipality) of Porto is a major contributor. By assigning work, relative to the identity of its various services and institutions, to a number of locally based studios, it has without a doubt helped a lot towards this end. The specific exhibition is going to showcase some of this work.”
EDA main purposes are to celebrate European design with all its regional distinctive elements as well as its common grounds; to meet, benchmark, be inspired and build networks; to promote and raise standards for communication design throughout Europe; to properly honour and award people who invest their passion in design and to create a directory of European communication design excellence where design buyers from around the world will go to in search of collaborators.
