At Shalini Misra Ltd they create global multi-award-winning interior design projects, specializing in luxury interiors for residential developments. Shalini Misra is well-traveled and well-read, inspired as much by ancient elemental philosophy as by contemporary architectural theory. Bold architecture and British craft come together inside the top designer’s north London home. Let’s go inside!
An opening in the floor divides this space into two areas, one elevated by nearly a metre. A custom version of Lindsey Adelman’s ‘Cherry Bomb Fringe’ light hangs in the central void. The chinoiserie cabinets were inspired by old kimonos and made by Rupert Bevan. The sculpture on the left is by Dan Brown.

The vintage Giò Ponti ceiling light is from Nilufar Gallery. Bespoke cabinets by Rupert Bevan conceal air conditioning units on either side of the chimney breast. Above hangs a painting by Ged Quinn and a wall sculpture by Anish Kapoor.

The bespoke marquetry cabinet doors were made by Minimo. A vintage pendant from Nilufar Gallery illuminates a dining table from Martino Gamper and vintage Carlo di Carli chairs.
The dining area is large to accommodate an extended table and it flows into two seating areas. A vintage chandelier above the dining table is a nod to vintage craft. The marble flooring is custom-designed by Shalini Misra Ltd. Inspiration and Ideas is utterly head of heels with these interior design ideas.

An ombre runner from The Rug Company picks up on the blue and grey tones of a bespoke stone floor by Venice Marble in the entrance hall below.

Danish designer Vibeke Fonnesberg Schmidt custom-made the acrylic and brass ceiling light, which Shalini sourced via Nilufar Gallery. The ‘Musciarabia’ parquet was designed by Piero and Barnaba Fornasetti for Xilo 1934.

No matter the scale of the luxury home project, for each the company crafts an entirely distinct concept and design narrative aligned with its clients’ vision, ensuring that no project is ever the same.

The walls of this lower-ground-floor space are covered in Fromental’s ‘Strata’ silk in the galena colourway. The Sixties ‘Poliedri’ chandelier was designed by Carlo Scarpa for Venini and the vintage armchairs are from 50|60|70. The neon artwork is by Sarkis.

Curtains in Lelièvre’s ‘Typo M1’ pick up on a mural by Lijana Jakovlevna Siuchina. At the foot of the bed, a Promemoria bench is teamed with a ‘Wiener Box’ coffee table from Gebrüder Thonet Vienna. The vintage armchairs were designed by Ico Parisi.

Neat Cut made the Victorian-style vanity unit in Sapele wood veneer and Carrara marble. The ‘Maurice’ taps are from The Water Monopoly. Taking a holistic approach, the modern design philosophy is centered around fusing old with new, layering lighting, textures, and pattern, while playing with volume. The curve of the main staircase is enhanced with an ombre toned runner with tones picked up in the photograph on the wall. The white-painted inside of the balustrade contrasts beautifully with the custom walnut-painted exterior of the balustrade. The staircase of this London home was treated as a grand architectural element of the house, providing a striking feature as you enter the entrance, and as you walk up and down through the levels.

A metal spiral staircase connects the terrace and the upper-ground-floor deck. The dining table and chairs are from Chic Teak.
The building was originally a traditional Victorian villa. Shalini Misra has made a number of clever architectural interventions to create a feeling of space without needing to add an extension. At the back, the house is now almost completely glazed on the lower- and upper ground floors, offering views of the garden from the main living areas.
