A contemporary house that has a magical aura. Rashid’s Long island Retreat is everything we’ve been needing for the past months. Due to the pandemic crisis, bringing a relaxing and welcoming mood to our house has become essential. Since contemporary style is one our our favorites, we are anxious to open the door so you can see all the details of this amazing getaway.

Like many New Yorkers, Rashid and his family have decided to leave the city at the height of the COVID pandemic and settle into a weekend getaway house, located on Long Island. He bought this house 5 years ago, however this time he decided to transform his basement in a studio where he has been working on a series called Anxious Red Paintings.

“Under the circumstances, things have been pretty good,” Johnson says. “Between painting, Zoom speaking engagements, and my board work with the Guggenheim, I’ve been able to keep up with a lot.”

His wife, Sheree Hovsepian, is also an artist and she believes that leaving the city has its benefits: “Since we were here all spring, we were able to see so much that we normally don’t,” Hovsepian observes. “Getting to watch the landscape change, we discovered two yellow magnolia trees we never even knew existed!” She also took the opportunity to plant a vegetable garden.

Johnson said that althought they were ot looking for a large property, they were excited about its potencial. And the final result is a true contemporary master piece with eclectic touches that add a magical aura to this retreat.

“Rashid was looking to create an extended outdoor space for new activities and experiences,” Watson says. “And I wanted to envision a design that would tie all of the proposed physical elements into a single narrative: the idea of awakening to nature, which can be akin to a spiritual experience.” Now a path with fun and unexpected twists and turns along the way leads visitors through the property.

Contemporary design is probably the only aesthetic that is always evolving. Contemporary means ‘at the moment’, so it’s easy to understand why it’s characterized as a mix of different styles with a twist. “We cleared and cleaned the space, leaving the most established trees to keep the forest feel. It is almost hilly and woodsy, compared to the classic beach vibe one usually thinks of in the Hamptons.”
