Born two centuries ago, the eternal jazz pianist Duke Ellington first saw the light of day on the 29th April, 1899. Having had to endure many of the racial boundaries of his time, Ellington began taking piano lessons at the early age of seven. The pianist’s childhood friends, noticing his casual, offhand manner, and his dapper dress gave him the bearing of a young nobleman, thus beginning the “Duke” era.

It was with the guidance of pianist and band leader Oliver “Doc” Perry, that Duke learned to read sheet music, project a professional style, and improve his technique. Later, in 1919, he met drummer Sonny Greer, who encouraged Ellington’s ambition to become a professional musician. This gave the pianist strength to build his own business from his previous painter day-job: when a customer asked him to make a sign for a dance or party, he would ask if they had musical entertainment; if not, Ellington would offer to play for the occasion.

And we all know that from there, Duke Ellington would come to be one of the most famous jazz pianists of all times, as well as was an amazing bandleader who composed thousands of scores over his 50-year career. He created one of the most distinctive ensemble sounds in Western music and continued to play what he called “American Music” until shortly before his death in 1974.
